There is a lot of chatter these days. The cell phone rings. The television drones on. We have plenty of opportunities to engage in conversation. Silent, quiet moments can be a rarity.
There is one area where silence is not so golden. It relates to the next four messages I am going to be presenting called, "Won By One." Those messages are about the importance of us assuming our personal responsibility to participate in evangelism. All of us are commissioned by the Lord to reach others for him. In that area, it is possible for us to be just too silent.
Bailey Smith, in his book, Real Evangelism, tells about working for a construction company in the summer before he went to seminary to prepare for the ministry. On the construction site he met a young man named Tom. He described Tom as "completely lost." Over the course of the summer the Lord allowed him to develop a relationship with Tom and the Lord also provided multiple open doors to share Christ. For whatever reason, it was just never the right moment for Bailey to impart the message. One Friday, Tom said that he and the boss were going fishing over the weekend. Bailey Smith writes of the tears that flowed down his cheek when his mother handed him the newspaper that contained the story of Tom drowning on that fishing trip. Bailey Smith wrote: "It still hurts to this hour to realize that at least one person, for sure, will be eternally lost because of the silent lips of Bailey Smith."
We pray for open doors. The Lord provides open doors all the time. Make sure you walk through every open door the Lord makes available and share the lifechanging message of Christ and his love.
